The digital collections contained on this website are of collections found in the McKay Archives Center and owned by Florida Southern College that were deemed appropriate for digitization and online use. Not all of Florida Southern College's collections have been or will be converted to the digital collection, but more collections will be added in the future.

Child of the Sun: Florida Southern College Digital Photograph Collection
This collection was created from a selection of black-and-white and color photographs, negatives and slides that were pulled from various Florida Southern College archival collections. The first selections were made in 2006 and are ongoing. The image selection criteria is any images that may give insight to the creation, form and history of the Child of the Sun structures which were designed by Frank Lloyd Wright including images of the buildings, blueprints and people associated with the buildings which were deemed important enough for digitization and online viewing. Date span of images: 1937-present.

The Southern: Florida Southern College's Student Newspaper Collection
This collection contains issues of The Southern newspaper, Florida Southern College's student newspaper, from 1908 to the present. Not all of newspapers have been scanned as yet. Those published during the construction of the Child of the Sun structures (1935-1959) which were designed by Frank Lloyd Wright are being cataloged first. Note: Some issues are lost.

Florida Southern College's Digital Papers Collection
The initial criteria for the selection of paper items for this collection was any correspondence, contracts or publications that may give insight to the creation, form and history of the Child of the Sun structures designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for the Florida Southern College campus. This includes correspondence between Florida Southern College and Frank Lloyd Wright and his associates which were deemed important enough for digitization and online viewing. Date span of items: 1937-present. The first items for this collection were pulled from various Florida Southern College archival collections in 2006. The process is ongoing. Though the initial criteria for this collection involved items that only concerned the Child of the Sun structures, the collection criteria has been changed to include any paper items that shed light on the history of Florida Southern College itself. As yet, these selections have not be made but will be added in the future.

Florida Citrus Crate Label Collection
The Citrus Crate Label Collection at Florida Southern College contains digitized labels from the Citrus Hall of Fame, primarily private collector James Ellis. These colorful labels are both artistic and useful as a tool in the citrus industry. Lithography for citrus crate labels began in the late 1880s in California and migrated to Florida soon after. The unique artwork, drawn by popular artists of the time but not identified, was used for advertising for a particular grower or shipper. The labels were glued to the end of the wooden shipping crate prior to going to market. The peak years for crate labels were between 1920 and 1950 when the use of cardboard shipping cartons became prevalent. The label’s color also denotes the grade of fruit and registration with the Florida Citrus Commission.
