DR. LUDD M. SPIVEY:THE FLORIDA SOUTHERN COLLEGE : LAKELAND
Dear Dr. Spivey:
Sending you a telegram today, bringing
situation to date after seeing Turner here. Althoiugh you
can have no adequate idea of the amount of good work devoted
to you and your ambitions for the College, and all I
have to work with — I think you will admit that we have gone
a long way beyond any duties that could be expected of an
architect and from first to last!
We have been patient too in money matters, seeing your situation
and your need for getting something (anything at all anyway)
done where there was nothing before.
I told you when I myself found things as they were on my
last official visit to you that unless some reliable basis
could be found for the execution of our plans we could not
proceed. Read the copy of our contract dated Sept. 30, 1938
Wehr was on trial as a builder. I found out that he had not only
by ignoring the specific instructions to him (see copy of letter to
him enclosed) but by his ignorance of good building practice
committed us to diaster!
He Is a born "buck-passer" anyway,with a European inferiority-
complex which makes him as dangerous as Chuck Morgan. He
blames you for everything. To me he lays the blame squarely
on your interference and dictation. To you he blames me,
to me he blames you, etc., etc. When a situation gets to that stage It is time
for some on to quit?
Robert D. Wehr was a member of the faculty and the construction superintendent of Florida Southern College. Pages one and two of this letter are typed on Frank Lloyd Wright's business stationary. The left side of this stationary is meant to be folded over to the back of the letter, part way through the red block at the bottom of the stationary. Page two is pictured here unfolded. The left side of the stationary for page one has been cut off. Page three does not appear to have been sent with the original letter, but it was found with the letter. It may have been used for office filing purposes, but this is unknown. There are rust stains on pages one and two that were caused by a paper clip that has been removed. There are small holes in the top left of pages one and two caused by staples that have been removed.
