Mr. Frank Lloyd Wright
Taliesin
Spring Green, Wisconsin
My dear Mr. Wright:
I have just received your letter.
I think it is far more important for you to get in
Mrs. Whitney's hands something for her to see than it is for you to come
here. I tell you the truth - unless we do something right away the Whitney's
are going to throw the whole thing up. It is too bad this is true, but it
is true. She has just sent a representative to see me from New York who tells
me unless I do something right away the whole thing is going to come to an end.
This is what I want to tell you that if we can keep the Whitney's, we can have
the money to do the whole thing here, but if we lose them, we will have a hard
time.
We can build the chapel alright. I see no reason why
you should make this long journey, and be embarrassed about being here. What-
ever needs to be done, we can do by correspondence. I hate to see you take
this long journey now, especially since you have just come back from California.
Give your time to the creating of something that you can send to Mrs. Whitney
right away. This is our primary task now.
Do not worry about the chapel. In six months, we won't re-
member that it was hurt. Keep in mind that in your new design for it that
we need a removable pulpit, and likewise, the platform should be such that we can have conferences. Three things you need to do:
1. Fix the skylights so they will not leak. You must keep in mind that
the three big, square skylights leak as well as the main skylight.
2. The high walls must be tied together in such a way they will stand a
high wind.
3. Let us rebuild the pulpit so that we can remove it when we want to
have recitals, and things like that in it.
With best wishes, I am
Sincerely yours,
LUDD M. SPIVEY
